Plain Bone Mortgage Button

$79.00

Product Description

A plain bone mortgage button for the newel post

This plain bone mortgage button is a smooth, cream-colored bone disc about 1 1/8 inches across, with a raised rim around a domed center. It is the traditional marker set into a newel post once the house is paid off.

The mortgage button, known in the South as the brag button, was set into the newel post at the foot of the stairs to show that the house was free of liens. This plain button leaves the surface unengraved, or it can serve as the start of a custom piece. Because each is custom work, the price shown is a deposit, and the final total may be higher.
