Product Description
A barnacle basket that blends Nantucket and Shaker weaving, by Christa Shaw
This Christa Shaw barnacle basket brings together two American basket traditions. The body is woven around a mold on a wooden base in the Nantucket style, while twisted weavers of shaved ash, borrowed from Shaker basketry, add a raised, textured pattern like barnacles on a hull.
Christa, a Nantucket basket maker for more than 30 years, first saw the twisted ash technique at a craft show and set out to "marry" the two styles into one basket. Choose the 7-inch in cane and black ash or the 9-inch in black cane and ash. Each is a unique piece of art, and she is making fewer baskets each year.
