Product Description
A 1968 Nantucket cocktail basket by Edward Burchel, with a carved whale on the lid
This 1968 Nantucket cocktail basket was made by Edward Burchel and carries more than half a century of island craft. The small oval basket is tightly woven in cane around a wooden form, with a wooden lid crowned by a carved whale.
Nantucket baskets grew out of the lightship baskets woven off the island in the 1800s, and by the mid-20th century lidded purses and cocktail baskets had become treasured island keepsakes. Ivory-toned pegs and a carved closure complete this signed-era piece, which has aged to a warm honey patina. This piece is available for in-store purchase only.
