Hand-carved mammoth ivory plaques for Nantucket basket lids
These mammoth ivory basket plaques are hand carved from genuine woolly mammoth tusk more than 10,000 years old. Each is made to crown the lid of a Nantucket basket, in the tradition that began when carved ivory and scrimshaw were first added to basket lids in the mid-1900s.
The ivory is sourced in Alaska and carved by master carvers in Indonesia. Choose from twenty-five designs, including whales, mermaids, dolphins, a ship's wheel, shells, hydrangeas, and roses. Plaques range from 2 to 5 inches, and prices vary by size. Baskets shown are for display and are not included. Custom designs are available with a low minimum order.
