This 7 inch round Ata basket purse is hand woven from ata, a vine that grows in the Indonesian jungle. Weavers split each vine into four strips and weave them into a tight, textured round body with a looped closure and a long leather-style shoulder strap.
Once woven, each basket dries in the Indonesian sun for up to a week, then is smoked over burning coconut husks, which gives it a warm golden-brown color and a faint, lingering scent of smoke. The inside is lined with batik, cotton stamped with traditional designs. The baskets are sourced directly from the village where they are made, working with the weavers themselves.
