Product Description
Contemporary Nantucket lightship baskets handmade by Larry Brewster
Each Larry Brewster Nantucket lightship basket is handmade in Massachusetts in the traditional way: rattan woven tightly over a mold around a solid wooden bottom. Choose from baskets, clutches, and open forms in 7, 8, and 9 inch sizes, including versions with ebony, faux tortoise shell, or a leather strap.
The Nantucket basket was born on the South Shoal lightship crews of the 1800s, who wove baskets during long months on station. In the mid-1900s, makers added lids decorated with carved ivory or scrimshaw, and the baskets became prized collectibles. Nantucket legend also holds that tossing a penny overboard as you pass Brant Point promises a safe return to the island. These baskets are currently out of stock, and orders are being taken.
