Scrimshanders International Scrimshaw Competition began in the Mystic store in June of 2002. Barbara Cullen, owner of Mystic Scrimshanders, began the event to educate the public about Scrimshaw around the world and also to help support this old art form. It is currently the only competition of its kind in the United States. This year's event will take place at Mystic Scrimshanders new location, 14 Main Street, Wickford, Rhode Island on Saturday, September 15, from 5:30 - 10pm. Activities for the event include a cocktail preview with the artists at Mystic Scrimshanders, followed by dinner and entertainment at the Wickford Yacht Club, on Pleasant Street, Wickford where awards will be announced. This competition and exhibition will feature the works of some of the nation's top scrimshaw artists, with some international artists participating as well. The 16 plus artists in the competition will enter roughly a total of twenty five scrimshaw works for judging. Many will be relatively large pieces done on fossil ivories, such as prehistoric mammoth tusk. The artists will compete in 5 categories plus a Best of Show. The Exhibition will be on display at Mystic Scrimshanders from Sept. 15 - 29. Members of the community are invited to come and cast their vote for the People’s Choice award during this time.
